It's not a bad product either, I just don't want it spamming "my" forum...

I didn't either. I was looking for Winston's contact details (as wiki admin), went to the main page and there it was..Star Gazer wrote:You know, I've never noticed that page before...!
How on earth(?) did that get there...? ...and why...?
Best wishes,
Oscar

I'd noticed the link at the bottom of the main page before, but never followed it.. according to the edit history, it's been there since 20 July 2008. Created by a member named Myebook. I guess before then it was just a placeholder stub.
The Wiki really could use a Manual of Style, but it'd be a largish job to produce.

Just one thing is not working. Probably unintentional but on trying to upload a file I still get:
The upload directory (.....) is not writable by the webserver.
The upload directory (/var/www/vhosts/wiki/www/images) is not writable by the webserver.
Still happening for me too so unable to upload some pngs
White dots were so much easier to hit
Photobucket and Box.Net.
Although I'm not sure the wiki can display directly images from external sources. But it can certainly link to places like box for download (look at my pages for examples).

(sigh) Ok I was hoping to avoid this Winston, I've tried pming, tracking you down on the internet and several other ways of contacting you. It would appear that nothing short of the weird, strange, revulsion brought about by someone publicly, begging pathetically and actively humiliating themselves in front of you, will get this fixed.ClymAngus wrote:sweet. Can I have my name back now please?
Just post the current passcode for ClymAngus to me at
[email protected]
I tried the online "get your password back thingy" yeah not really working.
That's cool, I've done acting, bring on the freak show;
i'M SUCH A RETARD! pLEASE PLEASE HELLLLPPPPP MMMMMEEE! I've locked myself out of my oolite wiki account and I can't remember the pass word. I'd use the e-mail reminder but I'm such a dumb prick screwed that up tooooo!
Help MEeeeeee, AHHHH aHHHH AHHHH!! I'm so embarrassed! GOD! I just want to crawllll away and ddddiiiiieeee!
There. That should do it, and if it doesn't work. Well it's obvious that you've been murdered by the machines and replaces with a robotic duplicate.
So maybe it is better to disable the auto-registering again. The whole bots are getting more and more 'intelligent' and to make boards/wikis secure needs a lot of time - again and again. If somebody needs an account, she/he can ask.
Yes, an automatic registering is nice, but if this results in 'spam-pages', maybe even trojans/worms and other unwanted stuff...
EDIT: I don't want to exclude anybody, it's just that I think that we probably don't have the manpower to keep our WIKI clean. Winston and Makarius are doing a great job, but probably we could need some more experienced admins to split the work.

I don't mind taking on wiki admin if needed - I do have a bit of experience with my own wiki, like I said.
In the meantime, there are two options that might work (I'm installing them to my own wiki today):
Simple Anti-spam
- adds an extra field to the page edit form, fooling a good few spambots.
ConfirmEdit - adds a captcha to the page edit form.

Sorry to double post, but I've written a little widget that should stop the current spate of spam usernames.
It's a filter on the username that prevents the use of the word "buy", which should block the "nnn buy medname" format of username. The same logic could be used to block the mednames themselves too, should this become necessary. It's very specific, and admittedly a "quick fix", but it should deal with the current problem in the short term.
If someone wants to implement it, please PM me and I'll send you the code and details on where to put it.
