NPC decals also work a bit differently to the player ones in that they're a single colour design, with a different decal design stored in each colour channel and the alpha in the .png- it's so there can be as much variety as possible whilst using as little texture memory as possible.
Your full colour decals look really great though so it would be a shame to not have them in game, i'm a lot out of practise with oxp'ing but I could probably cobble an NPC shader that uses full colour decals - am I right in thinking that it's the normal mapped boa oxz that your using at the moment, just want to make sure I work on the correct shader
I think, I am using the version from your page, not the download manager. Last update per 06 July 2014 - new shaders & materials. It also included a simple way to replace the decal so it was an easy exercise to do there.
However, your information about the color channels at npc decals explains why I failed. My full color designs just didn't match the way of display. If you could give me a helping hand so I could display them I would be very grateful.

Thanks again, I tried a work-around by using the player version as NPC but, as I expected, it didn't work out as well. As incredible as your ships are they are ways over my knowledge of graphics and therefore difficult for me to modify.

Is there a place where I can look for such decals to add to my ships? I remember that back in 2007, I had a friend do Soviet, Yugoslav and East German air force decals for me, but he never showed me how his dark magic worked

Welcome on board commander,
while most decals require coding its kind of easy to create a new texture including your favorite insignia

Roger, thanks! So I can just go ahead, find a texture from the game folders, and modify it with Photoshop or another drawing program? Plus I've already got a graphic tablet, so it can help.

I consider myself as a noob when it comes to graphics so I used Photoshop to change or add insignia to various ships. Our experts will offer you better solutions but for my simple modifications it worked well.

I was considering using Photoshop to add decals in the good ol' way and I think it would work, but then I considered using graphic drawing software in order to play with weathering effects, such as paint chipping and being bleached by sunlight/burnt by near misses and impacts from weaponry and space junk.
