I will continue to play both versions, although I'm spending most game time in 1.8, seeing if it will grow on me. But, if I had to pick a version today, it would be 1.77.
My take is 1.80 it is a game that encourages playing it super-safe until you have decent upgrades (especially in Hardcore mode). I don't have a problem with that. It makes reaching that "safe" point more satisfying and discourages casual pirate hunting for profit (at first )
