Hi extremecheese and welcome to the forums! If you're looking to bump up those points I suggest an extensive policy of piracy, pilaging and generally anything that will raise your legal status and bounty! There are also many OXPs (mods) to try out, check out the [wiki]OXP List[/wiki] on the wiki for an extensive list of what's on offer. :)

Ta for the welcome,
I think missile avoidance is the most pressing issue for me right now!
I must confess that I used to cheat on the Speccy version - there was a bug where all you had to do is fly the ship into the corollis station whilst on a countdown to hyperspace and you'd arrive there already docked at the destination. This I kept doing until I had enough to buy a ship full of military weapons and docking computers. This time around I'm doing it the honest way, and the learning curve has so far been very enjoyable!
Docking is now a doddle - to the point that docking computers are not on my immediate 'to buy' list, however my combat skills are best described as lousy (I'm using a dodgy xbox360 controller - it's not good) - it's a great feeling when you blast someone though ;)

No problem, nice to see new people interested in this great game! :)

If you're having problems with the combat, I suggest investing in a Scanner Targeting Enhancement so that you can track your tagets whilst in combat. Also get a Multi-Targeting System so that you can target multiple ships. You may also need to invest in some Beam Lasers or Military Lasers, as the Pulse Laser is pretty shoddy at the best of times. Get some Shield Boosters and an Extra Energy Unit to keep your defences up.

And if you're having problems with avoiding missiles, get an E.C.M. System fitted so that when you get fired upon by missiles, press 'E' to throw the missile off target. Doesn't always work though!

These upgrades are all quite costly to a new player though, so you ma have to wait a while before you can fully equip your ship with everything you'll need. You might need to find a good trading spot, or you might just want to sit at the witchpoint and target unsuspecting traders and steal their cargo. Watch out though, as the bigger ships with the most cargo will nearly always have escorts!

Feel free to ask anyone on this board for help in any matter, people here are very friendly and helpful!

[wiki]Witch Fuel Injectors[/wiki] are your friends for dealing with the [wiki]ECM Hardened Missile[/wiki]s (not to mention just getting the hell out of Dodge). Missiles don't turn so well, and if you can scoot past them as they come in, it should buy you some breathing space at least. And with injectors and a rear-mounted laser, it's possible to shoot down pursuing ordnance, or at least outrun them. If it absolutely can't be avoided, though, it's better to receive a missile up the tailpipe when you're moving as fast as possible in the direction of away, than to get one full in the face.

Or buy an [wiki]Energy Bomb[/wiki] and use it as your 'Get Out Of Trouble Free Card'!

But note that if you're playing Oolite 1.77 then its only available in Strict Mode and you will need EnergyBombfor1.77.oxp installed to use it outside of Strict Mode.

Hi extremecheese, and welcome.
Yes those missiles can be a bit pesky! As has been suggested, fly away from them (using injectors if you have them) and see if you can pick them off with the aft laser (if you have one). A bit of ducking and weaving just before they hit you can often reduce the damage a bit.
If your old controller is a bit naff, the Logitech Attack 3 is a very popular and inexpensive joystick, which works out-the-box on Linux computers.

BTW what type of cheese are you <licks lips> :P

I don't have many problems with the gaybox xbox 360 controller I use, its a wireless one designed to work specifically with windows (although all of them work with windows anyway!). I wish I could use my PS3 Controller instead but never been able to get it to work with my PC...

Also, cheddar or brie would be good!

Also there is the flare system.

A good Stilton would also be great :D

Are you off the same family line as this commander?

Looking at how the ranking works again just now and realized that 'Elite' is achieved at 6400, not 6500 as memory had told me. K-minus 5 kills to go and I'll be Elite!

I never got there. :( I think the highest I got was Deadly on the Amiga all those years ago.

How ever I keep coming back here in fits and starts and starting again, as I love the game so much. And with everything that has been done by the people here it just gets better and better. It is a shame I have rebuilt my computer so many times, that I lose my save game so I have to start over and over again.

Sound advice there, very sound.
Telengo - all the stuff you save on your computer you should back up before re-doing an OS - especially Oolite save files since rank increasing isn't a trivial task ;).

I know guys.... I do back up my documents, music blah blah. But sometimes things slip through the cracks and unfortunately my Oolite save was one of them. :(

Plus I guess a Mac save does not work with Windows? I was running the Mac version last but have moved back to windows, so starting again since I have some time off over the holidays.

Should be fine - the save file is just an XML document, so there shouldn't be any problems transferring it.
