Hmmm maybe we could fix the collision issue with a touch of slight of hand? By using plate units that bevel up at one end and down at the other, might it be possible to give the appearance of connectivity? Or the look of focused repulsive magnetic plates (labelled up as such). This might suspend the disbelief.

Could you put a big non-flashing flasher in the gap? Using technobabble to explain that it's a bi-directional interconnecting forcefield - that allows the ring to flex under stellar and lunar gravitational loadings as well as a safety measure that means the ring could be partitioned up quickly by shutting down forcefields to prevent the spread of fire or disease or attack...
That would be an elegant solution. And you always can say that you don't see the connecting cables because you are blinded by the flashers :wink:

I completely missed DaddyH's post! That is a great idea! I think something arced on the outside (spaceside) with 3 variants of telecommunication gubbins on the inside. Or maybe the other way round. :)

Flashers could give something like this;

I added:

Code: Select all

		subentities = (
			{
				color = whiteColor;
				frequency = 0;
				"initially_on" = yes;
				phase = "0.0";
				position = (525, 0, 0);
				size = "180.0";
				type = flasher;
			},
			{
				color = whiteColor;
				frequency = 0;
				"initially_on" = yes;
				phase = "0.0";
				position = (600, 0, 0);
				size = "180.0";
				type = flasher;
			},
			{
				color = whiteColor;
				frequency = 0;
				"initially_on" = yes;
				phase = "0.0";
				position = (675, 0, 0);
				size = "180.0";
				type = flasher;
			}
		);
to the shipdata.

Now THAT is an elegant solution. Great and it looks good too! Very futuristic and the explanation of Daddyhoggy is a good one. :)

Eric/ Thargoid can you make a new version of the OXP with the flashers included?

Still to do (idea launch mode on):
- Now we need cool textures for the elements. I did one myself already although not quite happy.
- We still need some lore or background story. But I stick to my proposal to place the ring halfway across the galaxy. And only place 1 ring in the whole Ooniverse.
- Mission?
- Station
- Tourist Hotels 'Hotel Ring View? anyone'
- Turrets on the ring?

Other cool ideas?

I definitely agree with all that.

Indeed. I like the idea of various unique things in the Ooniverse. Stuff such as this, the Tionisla Graveyard and the Tianve pulsar are interesting places to visit, and it would be nice of there were more of them, although, that requires thinking of new ideas...

Agree:

Unique objects:

Galaxy 1

- Ship docks at Vetitice (GASEC Spaceworks)
- Tionisla Array

Maybe some 'Generation objects' Very old objects indeed scattered across the Ooniverse.

Interesting... I'm going to try that...

Thargoid, is it possible to make only one part of the ring a station?

A collection of giant asteroid stone heads? Easteroid Island? I'll get me coat ...

But I definitely like the idea of a "Wonders of the Ooniverse" OXP.

The ring looks great, though – kudos to DH for his "pinch of technobabble = pound of programming" wangle, too! A mission might revolve around the idea that the generators powering the Hoggard fields are in danger of failing, and the player has to discover a new source of unobtainium to keep the ring from disintegrating: prospecting in various distant asteroid fields, locating the resources, planting mining drones, fighting off claim jumpers and pirates, and making it back to the ring with enough refined whatsit in time to save the day ...

Great storyline. Could be split out in chapters to make for a grand campaign. :) EDIT: Accompanied by background screens in the missions like BGS. Or could the ring be sabotaged by our green friends? Failing to restore the fields results in an explosion of the whole ring (like the earlier screens).

He - a lot of cool ideas, pagroove, Disembodied. Nice work Thargoid - and the flashers are looking great, Eric and DH 8)

And yes, uniquely places are a great thing.

From a distance this looks like even more like Smivs' "String of Pearls". :P
