Reminds me of the story about Napoleon in Russia. As he was invading Russia, he came to a little town which had a barn. Painted on the barn doors were a set of targets just like those on your ship. And in the exact middle of each target was a bullet hole.
"What a marksman!" Napoleon exclaimed. "Find him for me!"
So his men scoured the town and eventually brought a small elderly terrified man to the great general.
"I'm very impressed!", said Napoleon. "How did you build up such great talent in marksmanship?"
"Well, it's like this, your Excellency..." the little man replied, "I take my gun and fire at the barn door. Then I take a piece of chalk..."
