Revisting a random povray planet, here I had to invert the alpha from the diffusemap.

Used in the Lave is earth 8k oxp ( but nowhere near 8k )

Upscaled povray planet to 2k

and fusing two povray layers to add detail

For the citylights to be small enough I think minimal 4k is needed

Povray planet upscaled to 4k

These are difficult to edit because of their sheer/raw size.

Upscaling a low res image does not improve it since you cannot add new image information where there is none to begin with. If anything, it makes it look worse. Try upscaling a 320x200 image to 1024x768 and you will know what I mean. It also makes any imperfections of the original more noticeable. There seem to be seam continuation errors in the cubemap on those images, which I don't recall seeing on the originals. Have you done any processing with the cubemaps other than resizing them?

Edit: although, come to think of it, maybe the resizing is precisely what generates these discontinuities. The cubemap comprises of six smaller images all stuck together, so when resizing to higher resolution the processing software would try to generate information at the points of connection between images, causing these breaks in continuity.

The reverse operation (downscaling a high res image to lower res) does work though. If you had 16k images of the originals and rescaled them to 4k you would then get really crisp and nicely antialized results. This would work for certain on equirectangular images, not sure about cubemaps.

It is worth to remind everyone here that we have a great tool written by Jens, for assisting with planet textures and conversions between cuebmap, equirectangular and other formats. It is called planettool.

The seam seems to be more visible when used in the LaveisEarth.oxp

Here I use an original povray texture ( 512p wide )

Bit of crossovers, still looking for an artifical planet...

This one I find intriguing, where is this Iceplanet / Icemoon / Ice-earth? with normalmap? :)

This one is from here: http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catal ... l.php#1800 - look for Snowball Earth. I had to convert the included bump map to normal map for use in Oolite.

And more for scientific purpose...

The equirectangular map from an earlier post converted to a cube map [option cube] via the powerfull planettool

Image

It shows a tinier seam than the povray cubemaps which make me think the povray cubemaps were converted a bit different

Next exercise converting a povay cubemap into a equirectangular map

Image

Shows no obvious seams

Adding HD normalmap to a lowres diffusemap can really add detail

Adding a bit of gloss in the classic adder shipdata from Smivs classics addon
