Hint - there are examples in very early (Victorian and pre WW1) SF, one of which has a proverbial title.

There's the H. G. Wells short story "In the Abyss", about an explorer in a bathysphere discovers a civilisation of aquatic frog-like creatures under the sea, five miles down.

The proverbial one I hinted at was also Wells, The Country of the Blind

And there are numerous other Victorian and Edwardian "hidden land" stories, the one I was especially thinking of was The Coming Race by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, which has an underground civilization with strange powers based on the life-force Vril, which was immortalized by the name of Bovril. Would it be Boovril in the Ooliverse?

Facehuggers from Alien...

I'll give you the facehuggers from Alien - the alien eggs are definitely lying dormant until they're disturbed. I don't think we can count the creatures in Pitch Black, though: as far as I understand it these are just subterranean/nocturnal predators, allowed to roam a bit further than usual because of an eclipse. The humans in the movie don't do anything to wake them up.

Chthluhuhuhu - though opinions differ on whether he is currently dreaming in R'yleh or golfing with his Tangerine meatpuppet at Mar Al Largo.

The Space Vampires Blake's Seven encountered in one episode (think that was from a novel by Tanith Lee who wrote the episode).

And the space vampires that are recurring villains in Stargate Atlantis - more or less dormant until the Terran bods blow up one of their ships.

Reapers in Mass Effect 1,2, and 3.
They lay dormant for ~50k years, and then come to harvest all "intelligent organic life" in the galaxy.
They actually have a sort of relay (Citadel) to wake them up.

Ol' squidface, the revenant alien from the Blake's 7 episode "Sarcophagus", the Wraith from Stargate Atlantis, and the Reapers from Mass Effect are all good. That makes five - Commander_X is up next!

Will try to break the series of five, with a single answer question: book and author where humanity couldn't name a beast other than Monster.
