River Tam from Firefly mmmm great character but not actually a pilot , Wash was...
At the end of Serenity she's taken over as pilot following the death of Wash.

Re films within films, Marvin the Martian is in a clip from Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century that shows on the hero's TV in Close Encounters of the Third Kind

In Ghost Dog this girl did look at TV all the time, and if I remembered, the story in TV even vaguely commentated current akcitions in the movie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNq0hq0 ... tu.be&t=88

In anime Martian Successor Nadesico the crew of space battleship constatntly watch fake mecha anime Gekigangar 3 and even copy cool moves from it. And to move it even futher heroes of the Gekigangar in at least one episode watch anime Nadesico (yes the anime, in which they are watched) https://youtu.be/Pf6PjhiyIW8?t=118

In anime Welcome to the N.H.K the heroes workship anime Puru Puru Pururin, (about girl witch flying vacuum cleaner insted broom) https://youtu.be/iGEWTlkyAXM?t=572

I have the feelings, that I had seem this cliche in many other shows, but cannot remember it from my head now and those space pirates destroyed my movie collection, so I cannot confirm in short time.

It seems I am not good at this, so could anybody else take a pass? Disembodied made more points in this so far ...

I think the "recursion" question is a good one, where a real-world SF film or TV show is being watched, or referenced, within another SF film or TV show - it's just tricky to find five examples of each example, if you know what I mean!

With two from Doctor Who, and ffuture's Marvin the Martian/Close Encounters crossover, that would make three. I could also add the Futurama episode "Where No Fan Has Gone Before", featuring the original cast of Star Trek. One more would take it …

This probably doesn't count - lots of fictional time machines turn up in the Time Machine Room in an episode of The Librarians, including a De Lorean and a TARDIS.

More to the point, the Big Bang Theory characters watch episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in one episode (can't remember which one).

I don't think we're going to get any further with this one … if nobody has any objections, here's a new question:

Name five SF characters, from different universes, who are distinctively, noticeably bald, either naturally or by choice. Not thin on top, not with a bald patch, but completely bald over their entire head (facial hair is permitted). These characters should be human, or at least humanoid and from a species which does naturally have head-hair: Quark, from Deep Space 9, for example, would not count.

In the short story / fixup collection Mutant by Henry Kuttner the telepaths are called Baldies because complete baldness is a side effect of their mutation.

Lex Luthor for most versions of the DC universe, of course

Benjamin Sisko for the Star Trek universe

Annoyingly both of the other two I thought of are inadmissable:

Yul Brynner as the gunslinger from Westworld because he's a robot, not human,

Image

and my fave bald babe Persis Khambatta as Lieutenant Ilia in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, because it's Star Trek again, and because her entire species are bald, not just her.

There's at least one other famous, non-DC comic-book example …
