That's for sure... 'The Dosadi Experiment' is one of my favourites.

OK, name the exotic device:

They may be intelligent: they certainly seem capable of demonstrating a sense of humour, of a sort anyway. One of the few solid facts known about them is that, although they're massy, they're also quite light – but they weigh three times as much when you turn them upside down. And there were originally eight of them, but over the centuries they've suffered from various terminal events and now there's only one.

The boards have been down a while today... anyway, next question.

On which starship are the languages 'Trinary' and 'Anglic' used?

Ah, at last one I can answer without using Google!

The ship is Streaker, from the novel Startide Rising by David Brin. One of my favourite books!

Yeah I've got most of the series, but find most of the other books a bit heavy going. Startide Rising has the best story.

Will get back with a question soon.

Book and author please, which inspired a big budget sci-fi movie in 1990.

With such a ridiculously vague clue, it could only be Philip K. Dick, We Can Remember It for You Wholesale – except that’s a novella normally (only?) published in collections.

Yes, you got it too quick! :) The film of course was the Arnie flick, Total Recall.

I will never understand why they changed the brilliant finale of the original story by Philip K. Dick for the movie.
