<chortles> Some of the stuff we have to look at or read is... well, you can imagine!

I think the important thing is that the person actually posts a thread. I myself had visited the bulletins a few times before joining (I didn't join the board until about 4 or 5 months after finding the game). I would think that most legitimate people joining up have done the same - been a guest for some period of time, and then joined up to make a their first post. (Although I do realize that isn't always the case - seems that there are some legitimate people that join that don't make any posts.
Well, one very legitimate reason for joining even if you don't post is because when you're a member, the BB tracks which threads and posts you've read, and those you haven't.. makes it much easier to find where you're up to when new posts are added to some of the longer threads, and easier to spot new threads.

My first check is usually for the ICQ-tag. Its mere presence is usually a dead giveaway for a spammer, given that fewer than 50 legitimate users have it.

And even among those there are some that are at least dubious…

(https://bb.oolite.space/memberlist.p ... ile&u=2474 links to http://www.icq.com/people/000000000/, which strikes me as an unlikely user number. Combine that with the rather unconnected occupation and interest, and the total board presence covering less than a week, and you have a high probability.

https://bb.oolite.space/memberlist.p ... file&u=191 links to http://www.icq.com/people/1/ (wow, he must be the founder) and to literally all other sorts of connectivity; and total board time was less than half an hour on a Friday in 2005; he has a (nondescript) signature, though; can bots create one?

https://bb.oolite.space/memberlist.p ... ofile&u=17 was active for less than three minutes(!), has also filled in every contact information known to man, and sports a dead web link.

There are some others almost as dubious, but I giv'em the benefit of doubt.)

<nods> Of those three examples, one is/was almost certainly genuine (instinct) - the other two are clean.

By that I mean I didn't check the URL further. I have a standard set of checks I do with SFS, FSpamlist, Botscout and others. ICQ is one of them, and there are some give aways on ICQ accounts. I don't necessarily do all the checks, but I did have a look at the ICQ account since I didn't want to go further with the URL. The profile was quite indicative as well.
