For sure, you found it first, I was thinking it was Greg Bear!

Ooh, this is a tricky one to judge ... what would Paxman do? I think I'm going to have to give the points to Rxke, because he got the name right! Harsh but there you go ...

It is of course one of the "20 Evocations" by Bruce Sterling – which do appear in the expanded edition of Schismatrix, being part of the "Shaper/Mechanist" stories.

I gladly offer the honours to JayHaz, because it was him finding it that triggered me to doublecheck the name. I didn't know the book at all.

(Again: I thought it was Greg Bear's style...)

Thanks.

My question is simply: Who wrote "Shards"?

It should be a difficult one to find on Google, being just a single word title!

OK will give you something to help narrow it down. It's not a full length novel, but a short story. And it's by a major author.

Nope!

Because your reply was posted as I was posting, I'll quote it:

Oh and I believe (having googled Shards and Tom Piccirilli), that this is not sci-fi, more cri-fi.

The target is a sci-fi short story.
