There's always the warning signs too:

'Warning! Meteor showers ahead!'

'Planet XXX welcomes careful pilots'

'Danger! Giant Interstellar Spaghetti Monsters crossing space lane!'

Captain Hesperus
"I'd have been grateful for one, even one little sign that said 'Beware of the humungous pirate fleet lurking in the asteroid field'."

Sorry I wasn't being more specific there. For fear of excessive alloys harvesting the AD-X corp usually only place their Terascreens in confederate, democratic and corporate state systems.

But it should be very easy to rename models and graphics for individual OXP use. Perhaps all systems should have the N-buoy version when that comes, since it lies within the station aegis where it's more likely that it's has not been harvested by a 'preemptive scavenger' (it was about to fall apart and I only brushed it with my laser when I reached for the bottle, eh coffee cup, officer...). I'd like to hear some opinions on this.

So I didn't put the commie in right now, but what you think johnsmith?

My russian is weak and it was a long time ago. But my guess would be something like: "Protarians [something, something - might be "of the world" or "in every country"] solidarize [perhaps "unite"]" I'd be so lost in Russia. But Arkanoid will be able to tell us, since it's his native language.

It spells out "proletarii vsech stran sociedinyayties" or something in Latin letters. I think.

I was going to re-use the dog graphic, but I thought that would be in bad taste.

I gave up on the smaller version and used the fullsized Terascreen for the ad at the navigational buoy, but what do others think of this? The first one I saw when testing gave me a nice little injection of adrenalin. For a split second I thought that FdL was coming right at me :D I'd also like to hear feedback on adding the navigational buoy version for all system types. It is within the aegis, after all. But perhaps commies find them degenerate or anarchists always smash them up or there's no reson to advertise in poor systems or the expensive electronics are notoriously stolen in systems under a certain tech level. I'd like to hear your suggestions for limitations (or against) and reasons for such.

...Pet food ads?

...And pest removal ads (completely unrelated since companies claiming others' products to be pests will be sued and have to be very carefull with how they put their message out)

I'm not sure about the navigation beacon. It's just too "in your face". Also, I spent some time watching the things rotate, and it seems like you only see one face. If it rotates, surely the point is so you can see both sides. Either that, or advertisers get a discount on the reverse side. At any rate, they look good up close.

EDIT: I think the rotation issue only exists when you approach head on from the staion. At the whitch-point it's pretty hard to find an angle where you only see one side.

Also, the ads at the navigation buoy have a tendency to prevent you from making witch-space jumps. I don't like em!

Ok. Thanks for testing. I'd like to hear more comments on this one though. I don't really see it as a problem that only one side ever points directly towards the station, since it still gives 24 different ads to enjoy. It would also be a relatively easy to make both sides likely to face the station.

What type of station were you trying to jump from? If it was a Torus, that might have been the cause of the problem. I tested from (an unmodified) Lave in a basic MK-III (no injectors or anything) and could make a jump as soon as ever - almost right behind the station.

It could be made so that they only appear in systems which have torus stations. I'd like to hear more on your jump trouble and comments from others before deciding on this. I could do a branched development since I actually find the navigational buoys a more realistic place to advertise than the Witchpoint ones and as someone else wrote in this thread you'll usually have to turn your ship at the witchpoint to have a look at the ad. It would be like taking an intentionally wrong turn on the way to work just to see if there was any new interesting ads on a certain billboard on that route. ;)

But please do make your case against the N-buoy type. I think that it detracts a lot, if they keep you from jumping. Where do you usually jump from relative to the station?

Once out of the station, put on some speed, start the countdown. By the time you reach 0 you're close to the nav ad. Usually in a Cobra or an Asp this works fine (though the Cobra is sometimes too close to the station to jump.) I think maybe these things are calculated on size, so if you're close to something big like an AD-X board it will stop you more than the old small buoy would. Navigation hazard! And an eyesore! These things shuld be banned! I'm calling the Galcop health and safety board.
