I have come to hate Windows Update, and bloody Microsoft! Ever since WX hove into view, it's been a massive PITA!

a change to linux is starting to look like a possibility..... its just that a lot of stuff i have isnt supported on linux.

these two videos will help with taming win 10.... you can stop auto updates. i cant remember how but i googled it myself....

Even though it'd make my brain hurt, I'd rather switch to Linux than 'upgrade' to WX.
My problem is getting updates for Win7, which is currently proving impossible.

My sympathies. The last time I did a win7 install, getting updates via windows update took days in row and for some reason hogged something like 50%-100% of cpu.

It must be a marketing scheme for win10 or something, since the last time I installed win10 I had no such troubles and the system was up, updated and running in a few hours.

<nods> It's a svchost.exe problem - it uses 25-30% of my CPU and eats RAM - and even Microsoft's own 'fixes' don't work.

Just never update. Except once in a year or so, only after a full hard disk backup, using partimage or similar tools.
What you can read all over the net about having latest drivers, virus definitions etc is nonsense. Unless you really need them because some program or so wouldn't work otherwise. As for windows, as an xp holdout, I'm running it since 15 years always without anti virus programs and never had any virus. User behavior is the key.

Just like the good old days! I've got a disk with an OS on it (Win7 Pro SP1 OEM) and nothing else - no updates, tweaks, or patches.
It's delightfully lean, and runs fast and smooth - my machine loves it. It's like the OS equivalent of strict mode.

Got to agree with Cody on this. I have the same set up for my 64bit machine. Win 7 Pro Sp1 on an actual CD. First thing to set after clean install. Do Not Look for updates. Never had a problem with it.
Also have an older 32bit machine. It loves XP which again comes off the actual MS CD. The SP1 and SP3 I downloaded and stored at the time, Just in case I have to reinstall.

Had a look at win 10 on a friends machine. No CD! and rolling install just screamed "Danger Will Robinson" to me. Just watching my friend going grey and rapid receding hair since his 'upgrade' says it all.

Also gotta agree with Spud42. My machines run programs which can be applied to do a job. Calling them 'apps' makes me think they are missing 2 letters like S and l in front.

If you want help switching to Linux, I am sure people on this board would help out. Even I - relative Linux newbie (and only running it on my laptop, not my desktop) - could volunteer (though perhaps I underestimate your knowledge).

(Also/still: the reason I keep Windows on my desktop machine is, as in your case, because of programs it is hard to replicate on Linux. My Windows version is 8.1 - with ClassicShell and other, endless make-it-usable tweaks that make the prospect of reinstalling Windows terrifying, or even more terrifying than it would be otherwise. Just now I had to restore from a month-old disk image, and that was bad enough.)

I may well switch one day, but my totally un-patched/un-updated Win7 Pro is currently doing fine.
