Is it possible to have a graphic briefly appear in response to either a key being pressed or an event (say, incoming missile)?

Not now, but it could be added to the wishlist for the new scripting environment.

has anyone sussed how the crosshairs are removed from trading screens? i want to design a bit better sighting system for my HUD but the bits i'm looking at don't cover it.

If that was easily available then I don't think that you'd see many people playing with the standard sights :) But by having just the right tone of grey and just the right transparency setting, you can do something to improve the sights. Take a look at Cmdr Wyvern's MilSpec HUD for inspiration.

i have incorporated that idea - thanks for the tip :-)

is there any implication to using a hi-res (ie, 300ppi rather than 72dpi) png for a hud graphic??

I'm not sure. Ideally there shouldn't be any difference since the game should concern itself with the pixel dimensions of the images not the resolution. At least that would be my guess. If in doubt you should choose 72dpi for screen display, I suppose :?
