I am a least consistent in thinking that there are different flavours of the icon.

In that case I'd leave it the way it is...

I can live with having a white space instead of a favicon. Although you'd think that the browser should display the generic icon when it can't display the custom one.

Apparently one of the leading Dutch newspapers (Volkskrant.nl) also updated their favicon. That site now also shows a space instead of a favicon on Safari 5.x. It is the second now in my URL library, but I expect more will follow in the future. However, upgrading Safari means upgrading my system first and that means buying some new software first.
So, probably I leave the missing favicon for what it is.
