If you really want an oxp, [wiki]RealisticStars[/wiki] will add additional stars as well, though not as many as an in Cody's pic; it will also increase the distance to suns and, thus, the time it takes to sun-skim or reach rock hermits on the sun-planet corridor. Those changes can be mitigated by other OXPs if that poses a problem, but it will also decrease the visibility/lighting of objects, which if iirc doesn't have a plug-in fix.
Cody, if I change the numbers in planetinfo.plist as you describe, am I wrong to assume it will be overridden by the oxz? If I look for and find that code in the oxz(guess I have to unpack it?), would that be the best way to increase the background stars?

<scratches head> I
think it would be overridden by the OXZ, yes - and yes, you'd have to unpack the OXZ to tinker.

[wiki]Headlights[/wiki] is the solution from Oolite 1.81. In 1.80 you must edit the planetinfo.plist in RealisticStars.

Thanks fellas. I'm running 1.80, but is there a really compelling reason to move to 1.81? Any drawbacks/bugs/differences in gameplay that argue against making the switch?

It's probably best to wait (or not) - see

Exciting. I guess I wait then.

Been using Realistic Stars & Distant Suns in combo for a while now-- I like the extra space the moved sun gives, but I guess they're overriding the original planets plist, because changing the values as Cody suggested doesn't seem to do anything. I will have to tinker inside the OXP's and see what their settings are.
I'm also very interested in seeing the new features in 1.82-- but I admit I'm pretty attached to my current setup for OXP's and I hope they'll still be compatible!

Most, if not all, should be compatible.
On the subject of space eye-candy,
this OXP has some beautiful nebulae - such as
this.

Just started a new game on latest trunk, playing without any mods except for my Font and HUD.
Usually I like to keep a clean sheet, but I recently read that unlawful status expired after a couple of jumps (?).
And this.... this is just too tempting to do a bit of drug/human trafficking
If the law's laser cuts my ship in half, please tell my mother that I was out there saving a lost spacedog.
edit: well. that didn't end well. got fined 1550 credits, which was a lot more than I earned.

It could've been worse - at least they didn't send you for 'attitude adjustment' on top of the fine.
On occasion, a rock hermit will pay well for narcotics - and they have no docking restrictions.

One thing I really like about the current game are the groups of bounty-hunters. It's great to see a large varied group of ships together.
I was hanging around outside the local Coriolis (as you do!) when a large group launched...
and was able to catch the last two, a Cobra I and a Ferdy, actually leaving the station.
