I was thinking more 'Alien'.

Does this remind you of any particular sci-fi film or is it just me?

The screenshot reminds me of a movie from 1974, John Carpenters "Dark Star". The screenshot looks like the scene where Bomb No. 19 explodes to destroy an instable Planet.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Yes, I suppose there are so many and my knowledge is far from encyclopedic...

But Mostly this looks a bit like Star Trek. I was watching the intro from Voyager and we are now almost on that CGI-level in game. If only we had lights on he night side of planets (with random patterns) then it could be perfect.
I haven't seen Star Trek on TV since the days of the original Kirk, Spock and doors that broke wind surrepticiously whenever opened, so you could well be right...

Oolite does keep getting better doesn't it? :D Imagine screenshots like that one in 1984

And the winner is...

Yes, you too were thinking like me, Smivs... my commiserations

I'm not even sure what it was about the picture, maybe the crescent glare on a dusty looking planet...
And we have 'the' picture too, for comparison. Nice one Smivs :)

I would love someone to have a go at modelling the derelict from that film (way beyond my current capabilities I suspect...)

I really must get around to watching that film sometime...

Thanks for 'playing along' folks :D

Meanwhile (again), here's a nice planet

Half a dozen parcel contracts onboard, to the value of over 20k - and this bunch of assassins were waiting for me:

Having no fuel for injectors, I never had a chance! The life of an interstellar courier is rarely dull - but it can be painful.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

It occurs to me that notorious interstellar couriers could really use a Q-Bomb up their sleeves, for those times they just absolutely positively need to get everyone to leave them alone..

(yes, I know that's rather risky too, without injectors, but a bit of thinking suggests one or two possible ways around that obstacle)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

The day that core NPCs start lobbing QCMs around will be the day I start carrying one myself, Diz.

q bombs and energy bombs are already being thrown at me by NPCs' so what is new....That keeps me at a good arms length when I collect on my bounty.

There are a couple of new core roles - smuggler and courier - which are likely to have injectors and so might use a QCM if they had one. Similarly there might be cases where an assassin would drop one to try to take out a target. I suspect, however, that the times it would actually be sensible (and better than the equivalent cost of hardened missiles!) to do so would be too small to make it worth doing.

The RRS group rejected the idea of using Deep Horizon Buoy as their navigational buoy as they were concerned about the security issues it poses. The board was certain that it contains GalCop spying technology. So they chose a simpler buoy, one with solar panels that simply glows in the dark.
