OK, continuing the Australian theme - name an alternative history novel and author (the author is better known for a space series), in which Ned Kelly leads a rebellion and eventually founds a hereditary dictatorship of Australia.

First clue - the author is Australian

Second clue - The author's main series has included crossovers with other authors, most notably the use of one of Poul Anderson's iconic characters.

Another clue to the author (but not the book in question): "This is liberty hall; you can spit on the mat and call the cat a bastard."

Well, assuming you're not talking about Prehistoric Park, which is my favourite in this genre, it pretty much has to be Primeval.

Well, assuming you're not talking about Prehistoric Park, which is my favourite in this genre, or Torchwood which is more alien portals than time portals, it pretty much has to be Primeval.
