On Labour's promise of more bank holidays being 'witless': the Labour manifesto, so far as it is visible at present, in human and not reckless, which is more than can be said for the Conversative's avowed and ideas and even more so for their actual practices; offering more bank holidays is a small, nondangerous concession to getting people to vote for the saner, more decent alternative. No?

When polled (disclaimers apply of course) most people seem to like the Labour policies. Whether that is enough to make them vote that way is a different matter entirely.

The Bank Holiday idea is a throwback to Gordon Brown's ham-fisted attempt to celebrate Britishness by giving us all a jolly on the various patron saints' days, as if any of us cared. It's a trivial and throwaway piece of nonsense which will hopefully get thrown away: anyone who votes for a political party because they fancy an extra Monday off shouldn't really be allowed to choose a TV channel, let alone a government. I don't think it'll have a measurable effect on the election, and was probably picked out by the right-wing press in order to make Labour look bereft of ideas.

Labour's published manifesto, on the other hand, is in the main a very sensible series of policies which this country is in desperate need of, if anything is to be saved from the wreckage of casino capitalism and cronyism which has been blighting it since 1979. The panicky screeching of the far-right, billionaire-owned media is clear evidence that these ideas are sorely needed. Whether they are too little, too late, and whether we ever get a chance to find out before we vanish down the economic plughole, is another matter entirely, but for the moment we can at least hope.

One small reminder of the limits of the private sector - and especially, why the private sector should never be allowed to own or control any form of basic infrastructure or any sort of network - can be found in this article on why the UK's broadband sucks:

Ahhh, yes … strong and stable! A Tory government propped up by the swivel-eyed loons of the DUP - and even then, that won't be enough to give them a majority on English matters, because "English Votes for English Laws" mean that May's new platoon of Scottish Tory MPs (gained in large part by Ruth the Mooth banging on a Lambeg drum) don't get a vote on anything that's devolved - like e.g. health or education.

Edited to add: actually, I'm wrong: EVEL means that the Tories have a free hand in England and Wales. My condolences. If it's any consolation, as the Tories continue to hack away at public spending on education and the NHS in England and Wales, the Barnett formula means that Scotland's budget will be decreased too - even though Scottish MPs are now blocked from voting on these issues at Westminster.

Yeah, so much for a 'coalition of chaos' - it looks like we might get a coalition of crassness. I give it two weeks max.

Let me get my 2 bobs worth;

1st bob. Yes I want extra Mondays to me and half day Fridays thank you very much. You are aware that all the Gov parties are basically the same. Ever noticed any real difference regarding basic pay grade life in the last 50 years? And do you really think what's on TV is not government controlled? Are you still paying for a TV license? How much is that now?

2nd bob. Yes. Fully agree. No private sector should be allowed to control fundamental infrastructure. Also Government should be held far more responsible on how they are ran.
If you think the UK's broadband sucks.. :lol: :lol:
Over here we are still working on getting over 20Mb/s. Yes that is bits not Bytes. There is a factor of 8 between them. Yes our illustrious government will say it's much higher, but then who is using the home edition? Twice the price half the speed.

What a shambles - on both sides of the pond! Meanwhile, across la Manche, a new emperor arises!

I'm confident that, given with the public sector pay cap, and stagnating wages elsewhere in the economy, as well as different taxation policies, some people here will be able to answer 'yes'.

Liam Fox: MPs should wear ties to promote British tie-makers post-Brexit

Hurrah! Another leg for the UK economy to stand on, to balance the global titans manufacturing Britain's innovative jams. All we need to do now is find some way to monetise delusional right-wing freaks, and we'll be fine.
