The only person springing to mid is Mean Machine Angel from Judge Dredd.

Not sure if he has a plant phobia though...

Nope, it ain't Mean Machine! This one's a lot more mechanical than Mean Machine. I'd say about ... maybe 75% metal?

Another clue, then: he first appeared in 1979. Last seen in the company of a female assassin clone who's adept at pushing his buttons. Or button.

Stab in the dark... Deathlok?

Nope, not Deathlok! He made his first appearance in a magazine called Dark Star, which despite the title wasn't a SciFi publication.

After some serious googling; is it Axel Pressbutton from Three-eyes McGurk's Death Planet Commandos?

It is indeed the mercenary, hitman and former botanist Axel Pressbutton – obviously he was a lot more obscure than I had thought! A shame, really, because he had some decent stories.

Anyway, Loxley is next up!

I don't think I can compete on the obscurity front here so this probably won't take too long.

Anyway, I'm looking for a novel describing the history of mankind from the present day until it's eventual extinction.

Tempting, but since the timescale the author uses is a bit longer than next Wednesday I'll have to say no. :)

You may as well say it then, because right now I can't think of the title! A book with the Xeelee in it, I fancy ...

The one I'm half-way through is Time, but as I haven't finished it yet I can't confirm if it fits the question.

It was written before he was born I'm afraid.
