Yes, it looks superb.

Can you tell us a bit about vertex/face counts?

Ya know, when I went to school, the Enterprise was a Constellation class starship. I hope the flashers atop the nacelles are red and green, and not both the same colour? (Green to starboard, red to port.)
This version Enterprise is the one from Star Trek 2 and 3 which I am 99% sure was a Constitution Class. I know the class changed later in the film series and spin offs and in the next generation was a Galaxy Class.

With regard to the flashers I don't have any particular preference. I modelled it based on footage on YouTube where both were white so I have used yellow which is just about as close to white as I can get using XML code (I understand you can specify white flashers now in OpenStep but guess that you can't mix and match).

As I can’t get the white I want using XML, (Unless anyone out their can tell me different), I'll probably think about tweaking the nacelles flasher colours to red and green tomorrow.

Thanks guys - glad you all like the look of the ship.

With regard to the vertex/face counts the .dat file gives 2425 verts and 4718 faces.

Not true. You can declare white flashers with the new style subentitity definition (as opposed to the old style which you may still be using). Whether you do that in XML or OpenStep is entirely up to your liking. Both syntaxes are totally convertible into each other and carry no practical differences whatsoever.

Don't get too deep into a fake controversy between OpenStep and XML. Personally I think that both have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I prefer XML for shipdata, because it allows for a greater variety in value types. For instance you can have integers and real numbers, and you can have booleans, which is not possible in OpenStep. But Oolite converts all these into something it can use all by itself, so you don't really need to care. At the end of the day, OpenStep and XML are totally and completely interchangeable. It really doesn't matter which one you use. There is not the slightest little bit which you could only do in one of the formats.

Hi Commander McLane - Thanks for the feedback.

You're right I have been using the old style XML code.

For clarity would you mind providing an example of how I would specify the following flasher using the new style code ? I have attached the old style code below for info.

The flasher has: -
Co-ordinates 2.5, -3.1 and 30.8
Hue of 30 which corresponds to orange
Frequency of 0 which corresponds to always on.
Phase of 1 (Not applicable in this case as the flasher is constantly on rather than flashing.
Size of 2 units.

Code: Select all

			<string>*FLASHER* 2.5 -3.1 30.8 30 0 1 2.0</string>

Original Series Enterprise was Constitution-class. It was refitted and upgraded between the end of the series and ST:TMP and was classified as Constitution-class (Refit). After the original's destruction in ST3, the new replacement was still a Constitution-class (Refit). Some sources (normally those based on Franz Joseph publications) erroneously call the Enterprise-A an "Enterprise-class", claiming that it was an original ship of a new class, but canon sources state that after Kirk and crew saved the world and it became known that Kirk would get another command, the USS Yorktown had just finished a refit and was rechristened Enterprise.

Constellation Class is the class of ship the Stargazer, Picard's first command, belongs to.

TNG Enterprise is Galaxy class.

The sad thing is, I didn't have to research or look up any of this. Think of that what you will.

Got to love the Cargo Shepherd! 20 pods and one metal fragment for my 'now empty' cargo hold.

That's okay, I could have told you that as well...

To be even more sad, here is a list without me even checking:

Enterprise NX-01 - NX Class
USS Enterprise NCC-1701: Constitution Class
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A: Constitution Class (Refit)
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B: Excelsior Class (Refit)
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C: Ambassador Class
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D: Galaxy Class
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E: Sovereign Class

It's not very often I actually have a screenshot to share, but I've been working on something during the last couple of lunch breaks at work that I wanna let you in on!

Call it a sneak preview. ;-)

I think all I have left to do is write some rules and it should be ready.
