You know you're not really flying a spaceship, but the game "sucks you in" (as you correctly guessed) and you begin to believe in the universe (or indeed Ooniverse) and accept it for what it is. The breaking of that immersion occurs when something untoward happens that makes you think "oh no, that's just wrong" (for this particular ooinverse).
Then there's the game bleeding over into real life, e.g. stuck on a narrow pavement behind a fat bloke, you find yourself thinking "Tut! Masslocked again ..." From there it's just a slow spiral into insanity but it's a hell of a ride!

Oh good... it's not just me then!

Sanity is overrated anyway. Dull. Given the choice between living sane in current reality or living deluded in a pleasant fantasy, only a crazy person would choose the first option.
I wouldn't worry about that "spiral into insanity" until you start trying to trade your computers with your neighbours for furs.

Speaking of which, I had a fur to trade.

He he...
I have that when I'm driving on the M25 and get stuck in traffic.
It's when I look out of the rear window and see purple plumes I've really got to worry.
Cheers,
Drew.

I have to agree with Greenseng, it's the enormous amount of freedom that makes this such a good game for me.
I usually do everything at the same time, except piracy (I like to be the good guy). The game is set up in such a way that there is always something to do, be it mining asteroids when you meet them, or blasting pirates when you've found them. Plus there are plenty of missions to go around, some of which are brilliant.
And sometimes it's nice to just cruise trough the galaxy while listening to music!
Onno out...
