Those few planet names are as archetypal as the Cobra III.

Bit of a side note, is it possible to add the code that enables different forum "skins"? I know some nice stealth skins that make it much easier to browse at work without the over the shoulder Broo-ha-ha that can result.

'Cloaked browsing'... that is just so apposite.

This is interesting, but I never said so.

I have to say that I'm not totally happy with the colour choice. On the one hand I find that orange on blue in general is not the nicest contrast, and on the other hand this particular shade of blue doesn't appeal to me, especially next to the board colours.

No offense meant. Colours are just a matter of personal taste.

I actually tried to match the Board colours as best I could, the blue matching the title bar, and the gold matching the title bar text.

I think it's not a match to the title bar, more of a near miss.

It does work for me in the title bar, but perhaps this is because the orange/gold letters are quite small. And the boards bars are not plainly coloured, but have a slide.

I also think the blue background doesn't work so well with the blue of the Oolite logo.

Fair comment. As you say colour is a very personal choice, and TBH I would not have chosen these colours if starting from scratch. I was keen to 'blend' it in so it looked like an integrated part of the Forum design.
As for perfect matches, that is extremely difficult, but with a bit more time I could certainly achieve an exact match, should this design be chosen.
The example I posted is more a 'proof of concept' design rather than a finished article.

I'd love to see something based off Commander Matt's submission for the Icon competition:

I got to wondering how my design would look without the blue background...effectively transparent overlaid on the banner. I quite like it. Click on the image to enlarge.

Again, just a proof of concept that would need tidying up.

Just a note: PNG images support alpha values for transparency, partially transparent logos are welcome.

Here's the tidied-up version of the transparent logo above.
It looks white on this page, of course, but is transparent which allows the colour-gradient of the Forum banner to be the background.

What about

It doesn't look too shabby against the current background:

...as seen in a parallel universe screenshot! :D

Oh yes, I should have said: a set of icons at different sizes and for different viewing conditions is available here.

I’ll be redoing some of them before final to improve detail balance (things like removing the text on the smallest versions and removing the white outline at intermediate sizes); the medium-sized versions appropriate for this context probably won’t change much, but if you’re working in Photoshop/GIMP, I suggest keeping a layered version around.
