Brilliant!
Lots of very informative help there, written in a great style that really gels with the theme of the game.
As a relative newbie, you've certainly helped me a little on my way to galactic entrepreneurship.
(I may even remember it in years to come when I've got your rust-bucket in the sites of my reverse engineered Thargoid beam laser
On an unrelated note (though it may be able to be incorporated in the 'flavour' text): -
I read some articles about the smell of outer space the other day, and thought you guys might be interested.
http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/cre ... cles4.html
http://jennifersaylor.wordpress.com/200 ... mell-like/
So it either smells sweetly metallic, or like burnt almond cookies?
Hope I never get the chance to smell the dark place - before my eyeballs pop and blood boils through my pores . . .

Disembodied, this is some superbly written text you have there. If there are no objections by anyone, I would like to append this text to the end of Oolite_Readme.txt for the next release.
Great job.

Thanks, everybody! another_commander, as far as I'm concerned I'd be delighted if you append it to the ReadMe. If there are no objections or alterations I'll stick this on the Wiki, too, and link through to the various OXPs mentioned. If this goes on the ReadMe it should probably mention, and link to, the following:
Second-hand ships: M-Pack (Rusties)
http://capnhack.com/hosting/oolite/Ooli ... kRedux.zip
Bank of the Black Monks:
http://www.box.net/public/z2ahfudnt3
Ore Processor:
http://sancho.dk/oolite/Ore_processor.zip
Communist flavour pack - Solar Laboratory and Production Unit; Collective Zero-G Factory; Astro Mines:
http://sancho.dk/oolite/commies.zip
Dictatorship flavour pack - Imperial AstroFactory:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/12/ ... 20v1.2.zip
Your Ad Here - Convenience Stores:
http://sancho.dk/oolite/yaw.zip
These are not intended as a list of must-have OXPs, or even a recommendation (although they are all favourites of mine!) -- it's just a list of those OXPs mentioned in the text.
Speaking of which, I've fixed a typo:
Keep slapping the ECM as you go, if you’ve got the energy for it: it the first burst don’t kill it, maybe the next one will.
should read
Keep slapping the ECM as you go, if you’ve got the energy for it: if the first burst don’t kill it, maybe the next one will.
Further suggestions for, and contributions to, a Rough Guide are more than welcome!

Maybe it is better link to the Wiki pages for each of these OXP, so that if the link changes, there is only one thing to update....
Best wishes,
Oscar

Good point. There isn't a wiki page though for the Rusties... I could set one up for the second-hand ship market in general. Anyone got any suggestions for a title for a wiki page for the station official's comments?

Very nice intro to the game, Disembodied.
Well done that man.
Cheers,
Drew.

@Disembodied.
Yesterday I read the Excellent Intro story. It was like a movie which played in my head. Good stuff!

Thanks again, folks... I'm going to need a bigger jar for my swollen ego!
I've put the piece up on the Wiki
here, and created a small page for
second-hand ships too with a link to the Rusties OXP.
There's nothing on the Wiki that links to this, obviously. Any suggestions for putting a link in to the Mr Gimlet page? (I don't know why he's called Mr Gimlet)

Very nice, indeed!
I've put up another link to it, from the
FAQ-page.
Just one thing: Where are the lies?

Thanks, Commander! And thanks too to LittleBear, for the link from the Instruction Manual. As to the lies... I thought it best to stick to straight advice at the start. We can feed in a few untruths as we build up more material for the Rough Guide. They'd have to be few and far between, and they'd have to be kept to background material only, really. The kind of fibs I think we need would be along the lines of the original Elite's rumours of Space Dredgers or Generation Ships: stuff that maybe you might meet, some day, out there (and of course which someone might come along and make an OXP for!). Ghost ships, strange beings that lurk in the coronas of stars, derelict stations lost in Witchspace, that kind of thing. I don't want to send young Jamesons running to find Raxxla right from the off!

Why not? Many a young (and not so young) fools went off in search of the Solomon mines, the seven cities of gold or the fountain of eternal youth... That few survived should be enough lesson to them hot-headed whippersnappers!

Nothing wrong with a few signposts pointing every which way, I suppose. A "Through the Wormhole" piece could contain all sorts of unlikely stories, lies, exaggerations and assorted bullshit. But Mr Gimlet obviously isn't the type to spin a line... he's got both boots on the bulkhead, him. Which is not to say that a young pilot might not bump into someone with a more elastic sense of reality!
