RAID sounds fast, effective and safe, but only multiplies the things that can go wrong with your system.
Got it in one!

Good luck with backing up the data, but I guess you already have most of it backed up anyway

Actually I was still in the process of recuperating from the last RAID failure... and getting excited about an OXP. ;)

The only things on my failed data-raid are:
-all non-windows programs
-oolite and projects
-GNUSTEP-environment, which is kinda related
-games.
-savegames especially for TES_Oblivion. +mod downloads

I already lost all important files last time.
(fortunately I'm in the habit of putting most code on the forums. :D)

-Sad thing is: I put WINXP on a seperate drive to prevent dataloss from windows crashes...but this seems not to be the problem this time. X(

given up.

diskscan only repaired portions of the previous disk partitions...nice, if only I hadn't written files allover it already.

at least I have the settings , images and links saved in the documents folder.

formatting drives again, put them in a mirror raid. half the space half the speed, hopefully quadruple the reliability.
...
looking for a samsung low-level format utility now to really clean those drives.
...no not lowlevelformat :duh:, rather a zero-write util.

now to find out how to remove those additional and now redundant copies of windos.

I think starting up in safemode+commprompt, then changing to the tobe removed windows*/system32 directory and using the osuninst.exe would be the preferred method.
(preferred above editing boot.ini and manually deleting the directories)

Anyone know an alternative download source for wings3d0.98.32?
the homepage and cnet refer to sourceForge.net, which seems to have lost the file. (or a downed server)

Like nearly everything PC prices have dropped and memory has grown, my daughter has just bought one of these for £57.48 from Scan, it's very good too.
With one of those at that price there's no excuse not to back up these days.

I remember when it was £1 per Mb for drives!

You may want to give it another try, I just downloaded it successfully from sourceForge. If you still have problems with the download, let me know.

all files on source forge have very high latency for me, not only accessing but downloading too.
I'll give it another try now.
huh. got it in one....still have to look at browser attempting to acces the site for a minute, but al least it finally succeeded. DL was done in several seconds.

And We're back to square one.
Just when I had set out to do some OXPing... a sinister coincidence. ;)

Another RAID related crash,
this time a BSOD with stopcode
STOP 000D1 (hexadecimals)
nvraid.sys -address F76227B6 baseat F761c000, datestamp401828ad

I'm of a mind to get a new drive to put a backup for the mirror on.
(Plus maybe a fresh OS)
If I understand correctly, one of the mirrored drives can be simply disconected and set as a single hdd to recover the data.

That is: if this isn't a mobo problem.

Question: do the software geniusses resident on this forum agree with the approach I have decided upon?

disconnected oned of the drives, and backing-up data on it now.

Also got me a flatscreen monitor, so now I can dump the decrepid ancient crt I was using...it had no brightness left in it.
whooo! visible bogies in oolite. :D
