At boot up, enter the BIOS setup. Usually this uses Del or F2 - there should be a prompt on the screen. Work through the menu. What you need is probably in the "Integrated Peripherals" section.

Whatever you have as Shared RAM for the videocard, double it and see what happens.

Notes:

1: This RAM will be unavailable for applications.
2: Do not, at this time, make any other changes. You're playing in a sensitive area and "mucking around" is not a sane option. If you inadvertently change something - or think you have - just quit without saving. There is the option to restore the defaults with, usually, F7.

Most motherboards, if rendered unbootable by insane settings, will, after a couple of unsuccessful boots, offer to reset the defaults. I'm NOT trying to scare you off, just advocating caution until you become familiar with these settings. Careful tinkering here can be very rewarding. This is where you can really optimise performance.

In the Advanced Chipset Setup section, I found the DVMT/Fixed Memory option set to 128MB. I changed it to "DVMT Mode", so that the graphics chip would "dynamically allocate system memory as graphics memory" (according to the blurb in the manual) but it didn't speed the game up at all :(

As a last attempt I'd try fixed at 256MB.

The BIOS won't let me do that. It's 64, 128 or DVMT Mode

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas.

Sorry.

Go mad with the spondoolicks and buy yourself a kick ass graphics card...........that wasn't very helpful, sorry, just spent 6 hours on helplines trying to fix wifi problems..Waaaaaaaaaaaaah

Low frame rate on busy screen with intel 945 card.

I have the same problem, frame rate of 4 when launching, because I have the planet in view. Hitting arrrows keys a lot, I can turn around and the frame rate goes up to over 10.

Seems to be a common problem: (Try "oolite intel 945" on Google)

Spammers suck.

I would have loved to add the URL here, but not only did I have to jump through hoops (register) to add this hopefully useful information, but it seems I must wait a day to post an URL. Goddamn spammers.

BTW, glxgears reports over 900 FPS.

BTW, glxgears reports over 900 FPS.
Erm, that's a little on the low side if not full screen.

NVidia 8400GS:
Default Window:

Code: Select all

david@davcefai:~$ glxgears
14512 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2897.042 FPS
14473 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2894.480 FPS
14749 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2949.630 FPS
14749 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2949.664 FPS
14742 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2948.217 FPS
14755 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2950.992 FPS

david@davcefai:~$
Full Screen:

Code: Select all

david@davcefai:~$ glxgears
6507 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1300.573 FPS
1307 frames in 5.0 seconds = 261.265 FPS
1305 frames in 5.0 seconds = 260.925 FPS
1299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 259.789 FPS
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Unfortunately my numbers was not from fullscreen. But then this is only a Dell Inspiron 6400 (also called e1505) laptop with two Intel Core Duo T2080 (1.73 GHz) and this for graphics:

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM 20061017 x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 7.0.3-rc2

It's the same numbers reported by someone (with CoreDuo T5500)
at the Berlios bug report "[ Bug #12619 ] Users accuse slow rendering with accelerated video".

What happens if you type:

glxinfo

in a shell window?

It really does sound like you're software rendering the image. I have here an old Hewlett-Paqard desktop machine (i.e. Compaq inherited - the machine's probably at least 5 years old) with Intel 845G graphics, i.e. the crummiest of crummy integrated chipsets, and get 14fps full screen facing the planet.

I have gathered that the 945 may actually be worse.
