Fair enough.. I may be mis-remembering.. but it wasn't all that big, from what I recall.
Ah yes, you may in fact be right - I was thinking more HIMSN OXZ backstory.

There has been a lot of hammering square pegs onto round holes, there is a HELL of a lot of hammering in relation to Dangerous.
One of the major casualties being the intellegent animal races of the old 8. Thats a bit of a show stopper when it comes to oolite fiction.

Other casualties include galcop and 7 "galaxies". I think we have to acknowledge that this is a touch beyond simple "evolution" of the world and more sweep it into the bin and start from scratch (at least in relation to the earlier games).

Then pull it out of the bin 30 years later and try and stitch it all together. Bits had to get trimmed.

Hope I'm not too late to put a couple of cents worth in (RL just gets in the way sometimes :| )

Just to put an idea into the mix and enables the many galactic races as given in Elite/Oolite without taking away from ‘Human’ diaspora (and perhaps tying in the idea of generation ships), Jack L Chalker expanded a universe of diversity by genetically engineering dna to transform human into other species to enable them to survive on marginal worlds with limited terraforming and shipping them out to those worlds. The general premis was that most life on Earth shares a considerable amount of dna and therefore only a (relatively) minor amount of genetic manipulation can alter homo sapien to (other) mammalian or amphibian or saurian or avian… (or insectoid) species.

When a story is written, the author assigns human traits and characteristics to merge with the non-human species, so Derik becomes tough, single-minded and uncompromising and Hesperus can turn on the feline charm… anyway I start to digress.

Mashing this concept with a 21st century realisation that genetic engineering is practically a reality; then the Ooniverse can be populated with all species having a ‘human’ origin (slight variation from Drew’s Incursio), and where most of the Ooniversal population wouldn’t necessarily care or understand that other species were/are essentially human.

This idea also doesn’t necessarily fall outside ED canon; a branch of history from Earth/[insert 'civic centre of the galaxy' here] origin that expanded in another part of the Universe, where the part of history relating to generation ships, 8 charts and genetic modification is just an interesting chapter in ‘Encyclopaedia Galactica – Universal Update (pre 2500)’.

If we accept the limitation of Finis, that gives the Ooniverse many years of creative freedom (even with 4004! :D ) and as CmdrWyvern says,
"Who's to say if destroying it (Raxxla) created an alternate reality where it wasn't destroyed?..."
“Billions of sentient aliens deciding to ‘leave’ the galaxy all at once”
is still a serious square peg, but as Douglas Adams wrote of the more intelligent species on planet earth just before its demolition - “So long and thanks for all the fish”.

Frankly, I don't give a monkey's about E: D canon!

Nor do I accept the limitation of Finis.

Just wondering, as this thread has nothing to do with Oolite, if it should be moved to Outworld?

If it was to be moved, perhaps the fiction section would suit better.
