If you use a brush, ensure it doesn't drop bristles. If you're cleaning contacts, use pure isopropyl alcohol.

Time to engage the dreaded cable&dust monster in mortal combat again. New machine is built and tested to POST, the OS install etc comes next. Then I've got to pull the desk and all the peripherals apart (including the sound system), clean everything, then plumb the new machine in.

I may well succumb to temptation, and do exactly that. Keep it simple, and just connect the new machine to the dusty old cables.

If only it was that simple! All my cabling is "neatly" cable-tied down behind the desk, which means moving just about everything... lots of hassle!
Very occasionally, I envy laptop users. Then I look at my 144Hz ROG monitor, and my gaming keyboard and mouse, and I come to my senses!

You have everything neatly cabled and envy laptop users? Then untie all your cables and place the computer on your desk between the keyboard and the screen. Ler's see how long you would enjoy the cable hazard...

Too many people actuallly believe a notebook would take less tablespace. I have more space on the table because of using a 'desktop' (actually tower), whilst being a lot more egonomic...

Finally done, but installing the browser caused some headaches. Although I had them backed-up, it wouldn't restore my log-ins/passwords. Damn!


My new machine is over-powered for Oolite, but it will be needed if Alliance Space Guard ever comes to market. The denizens of SSC have been following its progress for some years now. One guy, working on his own. Newtonian flight model - and it's got torchships!

A couple of surprises: it seems the fans on modern graphics cards only spin-up at POST and under load. It's kinda strange, watching the hardware monitor while Oolite's running and seeing those fans at 0rpm. And Windows is not detecting my soundcard, neither is the soundcard's support disc. Thing is though, I'm getting high quality stereo sound fed through my hi-fi system. I can only presume that the mobo, lacking any audio connections of its own, is pushing the audio through the soundcard which, according to Windows, doesn't exist. I'm getting too old for all this!
