How do I mark this as solved, or does a moderator need to do that? Thank you all for your efforts! I hope that I may return the karma!

Edit your first post in this thread; you should be able to edit the title. But first, how did you work out the solution?

I stumbled across this thread

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... te#p402892

about OpenGL and full screen games. I added the repositories and updated all the files that were marked for upgrading that were associated with libgl1-mesa (I think there were 4 of them).

I thought I'd covered all the relevant material from an "oolite" search in the Mint forums, but apparently I'd missed the most important one. The only weird thing now is the sound is different style than before - but after all of this getting Oolite to run at all, I think I will live with the different sound style (I'm not sure how the default voice sounds yet, but the default was a female voice on Ubuntu 11.10 & 12.04).

I think you can change the voice in the options menu (2 or F2 when docked, or pause and then 2 or F2 in-flight, then select game options).

Anyway good to hear that you're all fixed up - will have to check that out myself as I still get the screen resizing occasionally when I open the game window up (although the max/restore trick works in my case).

I've checked that thread, and those packages upgrade your mesa installation to the latest stable version, 8.0.2 .
That version has a lot of improvements, so it's no surprise it solved your problems.

Hmm, either that or one of the other things I added has just nuked my install (the GUI can't start up). Time for a rebuild methinks - perhaps also drop Cinammon into it this time.

Aren't you running 12.04?? I noticed Gnome 3 especially would take a good 20 seconds to start in 12.04. It's a good thing you're just running Wubi I suppose... :D

A Ubuntu 12.04 install? Just get a black screen on rebooting after installation?

I guess the maintainers of the Mint repositories decided not to add these newer versions by default - kind of a bummer. I'm glad I got it to work, seeing as I haven't had this problem before- it really does, as I read someone on the forums put it, "run like silk".

It dumps back into the command line, and startx complains about a segmentation fault.

No big issue, just rebuilt the install (now starting to repopulate it).

Editted to add - now got 12.04 back in, with the addition of Cinnamon for when I want a change from Unity/HUD.

Sigh...

Not actually relevant to helping you guys, but seems a good place to moan about my 12.04 woes.

I clean-installed Lubuntu in two different partitions, one intended for a stable, most of the time use, and another for "Testing", where I intended to play about and try out different things. On my "Testing" partition, I installed the elementary desktop and the Pantheon shell to see what it looks like. And on the standard Lubuntu partition, I re-installed most of my applications and moved my config files over from my back-up hard drive.

And now for some reason, I cannot boot into my "Testing" partition despite it working originally - it causes a kernel panic! And my "stable" partition throws up a "Ubuntu has experienced an internal error" message, gives me a notification that there may be missing dependencies somewhere, won't let me open a package manager, and I can't open any internet pages, despite having a connection (I can ping sites from the terminal with no trouble), This is all after it being perfectly fine, going out for an hour or so, and then coming back to find it borked somewhere.

I vaguely suspect that something's gone wrong in the hard drive somewhere (I'm running from an external hard drive connected via usb, which accidentally fell out yesterday). So potentially I'll re-format and re-install and see if it works again. After noting down exactly which repositories and packages I install, files I copied over, and settings I changed - it took me long enough the first time!

Oh well... It's running okay from a live-usb at the moment - better than 11.10, in fact!

That's a lesson I learned back in the days of Windows 95: every PC I have has a !Config.txt in the root directory or home directory saying everything I did to get it to the state it is in. I can then rebuild it quite quickly. (The last time I rebuilt my XP laptop, it took me 2 days, and that was following the instructions.)

This time for my Xubuntu 11.10 - my "stable" area - I have a copy of the entire partition so I can quickly restore it. However, making a copy of a partition gives GRUB brain damage so there are side effects too tedious to go into.

I've made a few backups up my partition, but I haven't had any problems with GRUB afterward - is that problem in restoring such a backup?

I meant a copy on the same hard drive. I can't boot from the copy without fiddling with the partition labels and re-running update-grub within the partition that holds the grub boot instance. And compounded by the long-standing bug in grub whereby it puts the wrong UUID against some partitions in the grub.cfg. Or something like that. Anyway, I have a black-magic routine I have to follow after making a copy to be able to boot from the copy.
