Yep.. it's one reason why, as cool and as nice as they might be, I will never buy an Apple product.

Don't forget Dell and HP products as they are clients as well.

And I guess it doesn't matter that Apple instituted a supplier responsibility program which they report on publicly wrt underage labour and overtime. It probably also doesn't matter that they managed to get 99% compliance just recently. Neither Dell nor HP do this, by the way.

And that the whole argument is somewhat backwards is probably equally pointless to point out. The ones to hate are the management of the producer and the local authorities. And if you want to hate someone on the client side then the COO who optimized the supply chains most likely had a lot more say in who to work with than a product focused CEO. COO at the time was Tim Cook, now CEO.

Leave the dead in peace.

I'm no apple fanboi, but that whole foxconn thing is bull.

first, as other peopel pointed out foxconn is a huuuuge manufacturere and virtually every hi-tech company is a client.

Second, their average suicide number (while unacceptably high, ) is actually *lower* than comparable firms. Look it up.

Sadly, using Apple in your news title makes sure people read it.

Just as in the past Microsoft was a sure hit

Pretty much every connector is made by Foxconn.

IDE headers in motherboards. DVI plugs and sockets. Most d plugs.

Want to avoid Foxconn? You'll have a job.

They're on my list too..

Since the reaction of Jobs to the situation at the time amounted to little more than platitudes, no, it doesn't matter..

That's the lovely thing about corporations.. there are so many ways to pass the buck and deny responsibility.

He used his wealth to get himself bumped to the top of the transplant list, so a poor person missed out. I hope he's far from peaceful. I won't even get into the way he treated the real brains behind Apple, Steve Wozniak.

This is about much more than suicides.. suicides are merely a symptom. This is about employees locked in dormitories when not working, shocking food/water and hygiene issues, women forcibly given contraceptive pills every day, and more. Look it up.

And bringing such criminality to the attention of as many people as possible is somehow wrong?

Even if I can't totally avoid the company, I do my best not to enable enablers..

.
No, but pointing at Apple (Or Dell or.. )
is the easy way out. Peeps say 'apple suxx0rzz' and buy Samsung.

... And think they did a good thing (tm).

It's the *whole* economy that's sick to the bone (not only computers, it's food, heck water, air pollution et c.)

Slavery has never been exterminated. Pollution neither. it has never been worse.

I think it's too easy to pick one scapegoat (or maybe its super convenient?)

OTOH, if someone starts reading up on foxconn and gets a glimpse of the bigger picture, that's good.

... But who does?

I don't care if my lettuce has got DDT on it... as long as it's crisp!

You're right about that! Humanity needs to seriously consider the way it conducts trade, rapes the planet, and treats laborers.

Hey, DDT is not something to joke about - my dad grew up in Beverly on the southside of Chicago. They would seasonally come spray the street sides with DDT, while kids were out on them! :( :( :(

No joke... irony! That's a quote from the early '70s (or was it the late '60s... hmm).

My mistake, I thought you were joking ;). That's a crazy quote! It might as well said "I don't care if my food is poisoned, as long as it sounds good chewing" :P.

In the late 60's and early 70's people were drinking Red Barrel and eating Vesta meals. Why should they care about a bit of DDT? :D

I remember seeing a program about colorants and in the early 1900's they would colour kids sweets with red lead.

Hah! that's nothing, up until somewhere the 21st Century, people used internal combustion engines to power personal transportation!

Imagine, cities, streets, filled with raw hydrocarbon smoke belching from hundreds of thousands of individual vehicles, people actually walking around in that atmosphere without breathing masks, my gosh!

(Actually, I'm *quite* sure that's what people will say somewhere in the non too distant future)

As Jeremy Hardy said recently, "All those opposed to the strict regulation of the food industry, say 'Neigh'" ... :D
