Just to say I really like this OXP. I just met a Sidewinder on escort duty called "O'Brien's Hyena".

Who was O'Brien? Why did they own a hyena? What made this hyena so important that the Sidewinder pilot named their ship after it, anyway?

I really like the OXPs that give the impression that there's a much bigger universe out there than you'll ever see (which Oolite is well suited to), and this one definitely does that.

Delighted to come across my outworld name within the ooniverse Nev/Neville...also noticed a Nev as a henchman in a eandom hits mark once,,Feels kinda weird having to take down my namesake out there in the vastness of space..Sometimes I just kill myself :lol:

I Christened my boat ..the Black Widow, though I don't recommend trying to smash a bottle of champagne on the Lap top...

Minor issue - some of the ships in Rescue Stations already have names, and this can overwrite them. I think if you avoid the role "rescue_freighter" and any name beginning "RRS " then that should be all of them.

Thanks. Will add them to the exclusion list.

I no longer see Python Blackdogs named such on the STE, just Python followed by the name given by this OXP. I have even gotten close to get a good luck and did identify that it was indeed a Blackdog Python. This began about the time I added version 1.0 of this OXP. Could there be a causality or do I need to look elsewhere?

Are you using anything like the Griff's replace OXP, Solo? I've just noticed that the Blackdog is not specifically named in that shipdata.plist (it was in the all-in-one OXP). Nor does it specify escorts for the Blackdog either (I think).

It's not named specifically as the 'Blackdog' in my shipset either...or the core game.

I constructed a shipdata.plist copied from the bundled one and modified to render Griff's No Shader shipset. The Python Blackdog has:

Code: Select all

escorts = 2;
...
name = "Python";
roles = "pirate blackdog";
So Smivs is correct in stating,

Used to be whenever I encountered one STE would identify it as, "Python Blackdog". Cmndr McLanes OXP adds additional nomenclature. I have checked the log and my shipdata.plist but can find no errors. Will relocate the replacement shipset that I have been testing and see what happens.

I probably modified my previous Griff all-in-one, then. I wouldn't notice now, as I don't have the ship type displayed at all with the Randomshipnames.oxp.

Are you sure, CaptSolo? Perhaps you misremember?

The STE can only "identify" what is specified in shipdata as "name" or "display_name". As there is no name or display_name that contains the word "Blackdog", it is impossible that the STE identifies any ship as such (or ever has).

Secondly, randomshipnames works by amending the originally displayed name. It doesn't replace anything.

So, if you don't have another OXP installed that changes the names of some Pythons to "Python Blackdog" by JS in the same way as randomshipnames does, I don't see how what you describe could happen. (Also, I am not aware of any such OXP.)

I'd say, perhaps take randomshipnames.oxp out and fly around for a while, and check whether you really see any ship named "Python Blackdog". I highly doubt it.

Problem solved? I named the blackdogs as 'Python Blackdog' in the various incarnations of ToughGuys.
I should have thought of/mentioned this earlier - sorry.
I'm guessing that's where you've been seeing the name. What I can't explain is why you are no longer seeing this unless you've removed TG.

Precisely the case. Recently started a new commander who was not prepared to deal with TG2 so that OXP was moved to Reserves folder one level down. My retired commander accumulated many days of flight time and not a few adventures even after becoming elite.

My apologies to Cmndr McLane for accusing your worthy OXP for causing a problem which is really not a problem.
