@ Greyth: I fail to see the connection between exhaust plumes and spheres.
@ El Viejo: Unfortunately only the width and height of exhaust plumes can be reduced (or manipulated at all). Their length depends on ship speed only. The faster the ship, the longer the plume becomes.

Especially as the ships that Mandoman posted images of have fullerene-style spheres on them anyway?
My plan is also to make the new ships in my upcoming OXP exhaust plume-less, with a replacement shader effect (which is already working fine on a couple of ships on my HD).

I'm quite happy with that reasoning, but to me, the logical extension of that is that the bigger/faster ships would still have bigger/more engines which would still require more particle emissions and therefore more exhausts...

@Commander McLane - in all probability there isn't one
I must have misconstrued.

Depends on what Oolitian Physics you apply to your Ooniverse - in mine (a bit like EE Doc Smiths Lensman universe) there's a magic figure where there's no power gain from building a bigger engine (in Doc Smith's universe the very fastest ships are 90% engine with almost no weapons or crew space), so in my Ooniverse there's a maximum engine output and therefore a maximum emission flux - it may be configured to be discharged through multiple ports for aesthetic and/or configuration purposes but that's all.
But, that's my Ooniverse and I don't build ships - so I don't really have any say...
