Re: Oolite on Windows 8
I know the save file is the culprit, and I have tried taking ownership, but that doesn't cure the problem. The point is, if it can happen once it can happen again, so until I find a cure playing the game will be a bit pointless. Especially since it seems to affect the folder as well, not just the one file.

Out of my depth here (I'm still on XP Pro)... could giving Oolite a new path for its save-files work/help in any way?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Tried that, this is a weird one, when you do this you can't change the file path using the CTRL RTN option to any folder that contains my old file..El Viejo wrote:Out of my depth here (I'm still on XP Pro)... could giving Oolite a new path for its save-files work/help in any way?
ie I changed the file save path to C:\save I can get to the path C:\ but as soon as I select the path C:\save it goes back to c:\. It will not let me access any folder I put it in. When you check the folder attributes they are correct.. I am really puzzled.
Re: Oolite on Windows 8
Looking at the VirtualStore/security documentation for Windows 8 (and not having a Win 8 computer to test this with...), you should if I'm reading it right be able to get it to work by installing Oolite entirely within your own user space. (Something like C:\Documents & Settings\<username>\Desktop\oolite\ perhaps? Though I don't know if that still exists in Win 8 )
That individual file might be a write-off, but you should be able to recover the contents: create a new oolite-save file with the same name in the new saves folder, open the old one, and copy and paste the text between them. Not at all convenient if you have to do it every single time, though.
Edit: excuse me... "Windows 8", not "Windows Sunglasses"...

Funny you should say that.. that was going to be my next suggestion..cim wrote:That individual file might be a write-off, but you should be able to recover the contents: create a new oolite-save file with the same name in the new saves folder, open the old one, and copy and paste the text between them. Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Re: Oolite on Windows 8
Have finally found the issue;
Windows 8 froze part way through doing a file save, this caused a corruption in the file. Although the file still existed it nulled the contents entirely. The freeze issue with windows 8 relates to the drivers on the graphics card, I have re-installed and this seems (touch wood) to have cured the problem. I had no option but to start again with the game, but I have done that in the past and enjoy it so no problem. Why this issue affected the folder I have no idea.. I will keep an eye on it for repeat issues and to see if there are any other anomalies relating to Windows 8.. I may back my file up after playing on a totally separate folder just in case it does happen again. Cheers for all your efforts.

Re: Oolite on Windows 8
Thank goodness you found the cause..
Very strange it would cause the folder problems, but corrupted files can do weird things.. and every time you think you've seen it all, along comes something new..
On the upside, I don't think anyone here knew of the 'take ownership' tool before, so that's something that may come in handy down the track..
Best of luck with your new Commander.
(and remember the backups! )

I have kept the dodgy file, if somebody wants to play with it sometime, I can pass it on. Be warned the only way I've found to correct it's effects is complete re-installation..

Sounds like a mission for a snapshot on a Virtual Machine.. probably a good thing I don't have Win8, I've got too much to do as it is..Bryanpoprobson wrote:I have kept the dodgy file, if somebody wants to play with it sometime, I can pass it on.
