Ok, don't take this personal but 'Ur-who-shall-be-obeyed-at-all-times' can be a bit pedantic at times, so in that vein:

A spaceship is a 'what' not a 'who', so ............ No.

(you have my sympathy, BTW)

This story was a novellette, novel, adapted for radio and finally adapted for television and may become a film in the future.

<grins mischievously> Hmm... a Culture ship is a what? Or is it perhaps a who?

Touché!

But still ...... no.

Oh, and if you think I would counter anything 'Ur-who-shall-be-obeyed-at-all-times' states, then you think me a lot braver than I actually am!

Next hint (slightly cryptic):

The author is well known for writing about oily plants.

The title of the better known tale is (still slightly cryptic): A day in the life of the oily plants.

the day of the Triffids?

Correct!

Now the author of The Day of the Triffids later wrote a work about an 11 year old who was taught complex mathematics by someone. The name of that someone (and the name of the work) is what we are after.

Hmm, according to 'Ur-who-shall-be-obeyed-at-all-times' she remembered it as an 11 year old who might have had a birthday during it all. Interestingly enough, the Amazon-blurp also states 11, so the info on Wiki may be a bit out here. She remembered the maths bit, because the training was in binaries, hence yes and no.

But Chocky it was, so take it away, Spud!

I'll send the CismoFiCo candle-bomb ...... uhhhhh, where did that one go????

Ok, it's on its way to you (in spirit).

"Captain ####### rolled out of his sleep field ............"

ok this is the first part of the opening sentance to a short story.

fill in the #### ( may or may not indicate the number of letters in the name..)
what book and where did it come from. and if you get the Author as well i will fill up the evil juice before sending the CiSmoFiCo to your choice of chart and planet type.( dont worry i think i defused Cody's fuse/bomby thing)

I cracked and googled it. It seemed familiar, and I had thought that it was maybe by Heinlein or some other Golden-Age writer - but it's "On The Wrong Side Of The Law", an Elite Short Story by David Massey.
