My apologies as this mail is mixed bag of stuff
@ClymAngus: I have sent you the reply so you'll have my email address now.

Of I've seen of the few species we have here in NZ, they were pretty solitary/individualistic by nature. When they do get together they are extremely competitive/argumentative which ties in with the nature of the map don't you think.
Sounds reasonable. Which species if where is not set in stone so if you wish to change it for another I can always change the map.
Also the following might help in the deliberations:

Automatic Map Creation
Regarding doing the map as Data->XSLT->SVG->PDF I was looking at SVG specification at lunchtime (God am I sad
) and liberal use of <defs> and <use> elements should significantly reduce the file size. I managed to get at the graphic from importing the PDF but that is overly broken up due to the conversion processes so I will wait for ClymAngus's file to see if that's better.

Template sent, map 5 updated.
Hmm lots of frogs, lots of cats and lots of rats. I'll try the g$ war overlay tomorrow see if there's any plausable denial there.
In the mean time there's enough there for people to start poking around on chart 5.

What a nasty map. Feudal worlds are all over, getting in the way of some nice potential trading routes. A pity, that.
Now, I found a trading loop with some branch points.
Starting at Diriis in the southeastern part of the map: Diriis-Artear-Isbianon-Gesoed-Vebi-Ororbe-Tiqu-Issodien-Esbeena-Geonbi-Reriveza-Riratea-Geesla-Diriis.
Branch points: Diriis-Axeus-Lalale-Anatma-Riraed-Zabe-Biesmaan-Atenrile
Ororbe-Latile-Zaxeed-Erredive-Aquti-Atredi-Edzadiar.
As usual, it's long, risky, but profitable. What do you think?

sweet! I'll take a look. In the mean time I overlayed the war zone of g4 onto g5 in an attempt to help explain the general mess of things (It might spawn some good region names or explain why some areas of 5 are so screwed up)

For the most part, it's feudal worlds which keep me from going any further with the route. There's quite a few in this galaxy, which makes things dangerous.

What about just calling this region "The Siege" and let us assume that the high-tech system is simply holding the low-tech barbarians at the gates at bay with, well, it's more advanced tech?

That's cool to be honest it's not really "alone" it has QUUSANRI and ONSOOR
(What F****** fantastic names)
But as you say XEVERA is quite capable of defending itself.
These maps are dredging up such good text and audio fic material it's unreal. It's difficult to believe that this stuff has sat there mostly dormant for the best part of 30 years . It's like a treasure chest.
A universe was made for fans of Elite capable of holding a billion stories, In this small endeavour I hoped to open that universe up to artists much greater than myself, by god I never dreamed this level of geek cool would result.

Or it's a high-tech that is utilizing the surrounding systems as penal colonies and offloading their 'undesirables'.
Or maybe they contract with other systems in the chart to allow those systems to use the surrounding systems as penal systems and the high-tech in the center is the 'Warden'.
Actually, I kinda like that second idea... Some OXP'er could make a nice flavor-pack OXP with around that. I'd say I'd do it, but I can't do modelling and have my hands full with texturing already with SysRed 2.0.

Or the Corporate world ate its neighbours' economies, reducing them to states of economically dependent anarchy ...

Good ideas all (most of which are not mutually exclusive), is there an ambiguous (maybe even a little abstract) term that might cover all these possibilities? In naming the region, I don't really want to be limiting, is all.
I'll try and get some more areas hacked out and some routes. This map may be a little bit Spartan compared with 4.

How about LARIONRA as "the end of the line"? rogue pilots and traders driven away from the the profitable Corp States higher up, end up at the dictatorships of either ATREDI or EDZADIAR before they discover these iron fists will have none of their nonsense and they find themselves trapped in LARIONRA flanked by the two dictatorships and unable to escape again.

From your list of unused region names back on page 1 of this thread, "The Sea of Turmoil" seems rather apt..

"Citadel under Siege"?
