Thinking of Heorot, I had to google that, and came up with Outlander. 'Beowulf meets Predator', the poster blurb said. Hmm...
In answer, a spaceship carrying an alien human and a monster crashes there?

Yup, good googling old chap.
Silly film but quite good. The 'human' alien helps the local vikings to track down the other alien which escapes from his ship when it crashes. The other one is a bit nasty, to put it mildly.
Over to you.

They should've made a movie out of The Legacy of Heorot instead - a much better take on Beowulf, with an excellent alien life-form.
Probably my favourite sci-fi alien, in fact, along with the Moties.
Name this old short story: a scientist drills a bore deep into the Earth, with unusual results.

<chortles> I can imagine!
No, the tale I'm after is pre-war, and was originally published in a magazine.

More clues: the scientist believes the Earth to be a sentient being; and the author is very well known.

The top one is quite easy - Discovery (2001). No 2? Liberator (Blake's 7)? The only thing I get for No3 is suggested by those ship-launching outriggers - A Battlestar (Battlestar Galactica).
