It does start as a murder mystery thriller - but slowly it becomes more and more obvious that some things quite aren't what they seem. There are fantasy elements involved.

I have already wondered if the series can be classified as partly science fiction.

The main protagonist is a special agent, more than a bit reminiscent of the X-files (which came later).

So, now someone will figure it out, I guess.

It reminds me of Twin Peaks....

It is Twin Peaks.

The time/space traveller is Major Briggs, and the flying glasses belong to Thomas Eckhardt.

(An untimely system shutdown (well, two, actually) cheated me out of the glory on this one. DaddyHoggy, you're up. )

Edit: If I might add, the series itself isn't particularly obscure, but the clues we were given certainly were. Both Major Briggs and (especially) Thomas Eckhardt are rather peripheral characters and hardly involved in the main plot at all.
And personally, I'd never think to classify it as sci-fi, although I can see the point being argued.

Sorry about that - the spinning glasses rang a bell, but the final set of clues made it suddenly very obvious!

Anyway - this will either be instantly obvious or a real head scratcher - depending on whether you recall the memorable scene!

In which film, is the alien visitor, having observed human behaviour, convinced that the amber light on a traffic light means "Go faster!"

A good movie, but for this, the wrong answer

Rats! I always remember the scene where the 'newcomer' drinks the curdled milk!

Ah do believe that is Starman! One of my favourite films as a kid, and one of the best theme tunes in the world of scifi...

The winner is indeed DaddyHoggy! Now to the traffic lights-confused alien ...

Didn't I already post an answer to the traffic signally challenged extraterrestrial not one post above yours!?

You did indeed, and if "Starman" is the answer, you get the point no doubt! (Is it?)

I was just acknowledging that "Twin Peaks" was the answer to my question, and as far as I can see DaddyHoggy was the first to guess at that.

All cleared up?

And to doubly confirm the confirmation - Selezen is indeed correct!

Ah, yes, sorry... Been a busy kinda day and I was skim reading. Sorry for the confusion...

I'm not sure how obscure this is but I suspect it may be quite easy...

Name the series of novels in which a poor farmer is chased into space by a bunch of huge scary spider-like creatures who want to get their hands on an item of fancy clothing he inherits from the dying captain of the ship that crashed on his farm.

Hmm, shouldn't at least half the night already have had passed when you wrote that? Depending on whereabouts you are in Australia, you posted it between 1:40 and 3:40 AM.
