After 24 hours of shared ignorance by all of us, what about another hint?
It does start as a murder mystery thriller - but slowly it becomes more and more obvious that some things quite aren't what they seem. There are fantasy elements involved.
I have already wondered if the series can be classified as partly science fiction.
The main protagonist is a special agent, more than a bit reminiscent of the X-files (which came later).
The time/space traveller is Major Briggs, and the flying glasses belong to Thomas Eckhardt.
(An untimely system shutdown (well, two, actually) cheated me out of the glory on this one. DaddyHoggy, you're up. )
Edit: If I might add, the series itself isn't particularly obscure, but the clues we were given certainly were. Both Major Briggs and (especially) Thomas Eckhardt are rather peripheral characters and hardly involved in the main plot at all.
And personally, I'd never think to classify it as sci-fi, although I can see the point being argued.

Sorry about that - the spinning glasses rang a bell, but the final set of clues made it suddenly very obvious!
Anyway - this will either be instantly obvious or a real head scratcher - depending on whether you recall the memorable scene!
