Concerning the birds' nut cracking techniques: I guess they always were intelligent enough to throw such things on rocks, and that it's just us humans who eased their life by creating streets and parking places where they can do the same without the need of rocks. Terry Pratchett did depict a similar thing when an eagle picked up that great god in the body of a turtle, in order to drop it on the next rock to have some food
