Are we going to purge these or let them be?
I think it depends. When I was doing the archeology thing a little while back, my first sightings were nuked, whereas all the profiles from my last report are still alive and kicking.
There have been several purges of the 'archeological' members, whenever some of the assassins took the time to do it. I think for instance DaddyHoggy did it. But of course there will still be some 'members' who survived the purges. I doesn't hurt to kill them.

However, most posts from the beginning of the boards were lost, for instance when the BB was hacked end of last year, but even before that. This means that many legitimate members of the early days who posted a lot have now a post count of '0' to their name, so in a superficial examination they may look like spammers.

I think the 'joined' and 'last visited' time tags give a good hint. This one is legitimate, but this one perhaps never was (or if he was, he lost interest very quickly).

Another reason to allow spambots to post avatars ... it's just one more stick to beat them with.

Yep, and I have a nice little addon for Firefox that allows me to right click on a picture and run checks on Tineye. Your avatar gives 87 hits by the way. :D

On avatars: it’s possible to disable avatar changing for newly registered users, but not to disable uploads specifically, and I assume many real users will want to set up their accounts in one go. I dislike the idea of spambots cluttering up the server with avatars, but in reality I doubt it’s a significant use of bandwidth really. (Possibly Giles would like to weigh in on that one?)
