a demonstration of his machine gave the chicken/egg question a completely new meaning.

esp since the egg was hard-boiled...

Well this had a very Pratchett smell about it so I googled to see what I could find. Is it Johnny and the Bomb by Mr T Pratchett?

nope, the name we're looking for here ain't terry pratchett.

the guy's story is a short sideline in the novel, but his invention is central to the plot.

One of the Grandmasters of science fiction wrote that novel.

back to the guy whose name we're looking for...

his invention made space travel a really small step for a man ...

but it failed because of a supernova. leaving the main characters stranded on a far away planet.

Is this a Heinlein tale?
