A planetary engineer gets recruited on an expedition to find a planet that's not a planet at all. Novel and author?

Strata by Terry Pratchett.
“The sky spun again as Marco turned the ship so that ‘down’ was where long tradition had always put it, in the region of the feet.”

Apparently I can’t think of anything, so I forfeit to Cody in his capacity of First Meaningful Cougher. :-)

<mutters something about too many pink gins at the Admiralty> Thanks a bunch, guv'nor!
In my new-found capacity as First Meaningful Cougher (ahem), I'll ask an easy one: just what was the captain's fancy?

Would it be a spaceship from Stephen R. Donaldson's Gap Cycle?

Aye... the Captain's Fancy is a pirate ship. One of the finest ship-names in sci-fi, is that... double-edged.
The Gap Cycle is a dark tale of rape, piracy and sinister powers... a very good read.
