Yep... it can be much longer (days even), depending on various factors.

I sent a PM earlier this afternoon and have just checked - it is still in the outbox !
Your PM will stay in your outbox until the recipient has read (or at least opened) it. I have a PM still in my outbox since Dec 30th, 2008. And some more from Oct 23rd and 24th, 2009.
If their potential recipients have left the boards and don't return, PMs will stay in your outbox forever (or until you delete them).
