Another hint.

In the series which has the unofficial crossover, an unusual rift in space leads into an alternate fluid hyperspace that is described exactly like the Babylon 5 hyperspace. And the ships in there - which are from the crossover species - are mostly organic living things. Both concepts are nearly unique for the series that has the crossover.

Hope that helps a bit :(

PS.: Commander McLane is correct, english is not my mother tongue. But both series - ha, also a hint - at least also exist in german.

Wait a minute...

I initially dismissed this as a far too obvious comparison, because they appeared in the season 3-4 two-parter (not season 2-3) and because I couldn't fathom the name of the species being the same in B5 and Voyager but maybe that last point was me misunderstanding the question.

Anyway, here goes:

Series: Star Trek Voyager
Episodes: Scorpion 1&2
Race: Species 8472 (Undine) (Shadows)

?

Further connection is that the Shadows and 8472 were both rendered as CGI by Foundation Imaging. Re-used models, anyone? ;-)

Ah, not too obscure at last :D

All correct, and that even with my misinformation (sorry :( ) about series 2 & 3 ... remembered that one wrong.

Over to Mr. Selezen.

It wasn't obscure for me, though - my son is an AVID Voyager fan and we've sat and watched the aforementioned episodes repeatedly, as they're one of the few Voyager eps that I can tolerate watching. That and "In The Flesh", where 8472 set up a virtual representation of Starfleet Academy are some of the better ones. Or at least more enjoyable.

Other than that, VOYAGER SUCKS! ;-)

Anyway. Trivia.

It's a book. It's a sequel to a book that was the sequel to a film that was based on a short story. This book features the making of the film as part of the plot. Yes - I've gone for a convoluted description to try and make this rather easy question a little harder. ;-)

Name of the book and author please. :-)

"2010: Odyssey Two" by Arthur C. Clarke?

Nightfall by Asimov?

Both incorrect. Clue: the sequels were written by someone other than the original author due to the fact that the original author passed away.

Another clue: the original author of the short story has written a number of very well known short stories and a good number of them have been converted into films. Very popular chap.

Total Recall by Piers Anthony, based on Total Recall (film), based on "We can remember it for you wholesale" by Philip K Dick?

No - Piers Anthony's Total Recall isn't a sequel, it's a novelisation. Remember I'm looking for a sequel of a sequel.

Mini clue - ONE element of cim's answer is pointing in the right direction.

Well PKD's remember wholesale thingy was 'losely' made into Total Recall the Arnie film. Thre's been a recent remake of the film IIRC also called Total Recall.

Okay... what about "Blade Runner 2: Edge of Human" by KW Jeter, sequel to the film Bladerunner, based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K Dick?

(If I'd looked at the dates on Total Recall more closely I'd have realised the second book, published a year before the film's release, was unlikely to be a sequel to it...)

Close. So close. Re-read the question and try again.

*kicks self* Blade Runner 3: Replicant Night, same author, a sequel to ... etc.

(At least I got the right PKD story after only two attempts, or this could have been a long night!)

Yay! It was a long road, but you got there.

I thought the Jeter books were rather good. A worthy continuation of the series that were sadly panned. Shame.

Over to you.
