This question is nagging away at me... I'm sure that I know the damn answer, but it eludes me!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

The Google-Fu says "Milky Way Marmalade" as the book and the character is "Caffrey Quark". A Douglas Adams type of book.
