Just before I logged-off, late last night, a porn pedlar joined. It posted as katana was in mid-stroke, and it's post was a full colour image of some very distasteful porn. Is there no way to prevent posting of pics for new members? Thirty seconds later, and I'd have missed it and a very nasty image would've remained on the forum for several hours, probably.

There doesn’t seem to be a built-in way. We used a mod for the old board, but there’s administrative overhead and potential security problems. (Also, the way mods were handled in phpBB 2 was mind-bogglingly awful; I haven’t investigated whether phpBB 3 has a halfway-sane approach.)

Might this be the solution?
Make sure the Newly Registered user group function is activated. Choose the amount of posts for it. Then install Authorized for URLs -->> http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/a ... d_for_urls

Give the Registered user group, Yes permissions. Give the Newly Registered group Never permissions. Once they've posted enough posts and are removed from the Newly Registered group, they'll be able to post images/URLs.
Edit: I missed your comment about administrative overheads and potential security problems ... presumably these are involved here?

Firstly, he joined, then cloaked, and has only now decloaked. Secondly there are loads of brand-new forum signups under this profile name all over the net. And thirdly it's got 77 hits on SFS. :D

Good spot - IP address has the maximum 200 entries on SFS (I've added it to my naughty list)

It's tempting - I've got about 100 IP addresses in my little black book that get 100+ hits on SFS, do I ban them all?

That's what I've been doing... any IP with more than 50 - 60 hits, and lots of recent activity, I ban.
Ditto with e-mail addresses.

Just seems a bit Q-mine rather than precise katana - is there a list of already banned IPs and I'll remove them from my list...

If you want to kill just everything, a Q-mine can be a very precise instrument.

Yeah... MCP, Banning, IPs and there's a list of banned IPs... I got one the other day with 788 hits (now risen to 901).

Kill them all, and let God sort them out!

Oh it's tempting, believe me... I'd happily ban the IP/e-mail of every spammer that I delete, but, well... you know!
