Are they almost all lobstoid worlds? Need we fear an invasion of crazed missionaries blasting every human in sight?

given the planet area for each world is pretty much infinite [i seem to recall someone postig way back in the day that they'd taken a phonecall and forgotten to pause the game and were wondering how far out their Cobra was when they finally came back], could there be compromise by having two or more planets/stations when you jump in; maybe on opposite sides of the sun? you could possibly [he said, w/ very little script knowledge, lol] spawn when coming out of Witchspace and decide where to head from there - a bit like maybe heading for a Hathor near the sun rather than the Planet's Coriolis. market scripts could make a difference so you could have a good, better and worse place to decide to go, maybe?

This is definitely possible. What's currently not possible, is showing that there are multiple planets easily in the F7 screen, not without rewriting it or somehow replacing it.

It would be nice to show the other planets (an F7F7 screen perhaps - have you seen what Phkb did with station maps for LitF v0.8?).

But we can't seem to describe directions/distances with any accuracy (we can say "this side of the star"/"the far side of the star", but that is as exciting as it gets!).

theoretically you could add a planet as an item - just a very large "station" - and it would be visible when you exited the jump. an actual trading station could be placed near it.

Adding new planets is possible and has been done before by existing OXPs/OXZs. Giving players a reason to go them is the key thing, so like you said having alternative trading stations there would be one.

EITHER Additional Planets (Redspear/Spara) adds planets, and SFEP (Stations for extra planets) adds stations for them. These also register on Market Inquirer so you can see where to go in-system for good trades. The planets are placed for effect, and are relatively close together.

OR Stranger's World adds planets and moons as well and stations for them - and trading missions for landing on planet surfaces. The planets & moons orbit and some are very far away indeed.

OR Far Planets (Norby) has very distant planets and missions to them.

ASC and/or Telescope allow you to see where planets etc are in the skies.

SOTL Exploration allows you to find planets using gravitimetric analysis!
