How much does an image need to be altered before it could be considered your own work?
To the best of my understanding - If any part is carried over, it's a derivative work. Period. It has to be 100% from-scratch to not be a derivative.*

*- That's not to say you can't copy a color or something like that. Use a bit of common sense.

Even spaceships have feelings :)
I came across these two Sidewinder love-birds the other day.

Met this guy at Zadies, somewhere halfway between the planet and the W-beacon. He was shooting pirates, I joined in and when they were done, I was wondering where he was going so I followed him. Turns out he was on patrol; when he got to the W-beacon he turned around and started back for the planet. I followed and decided to take a photo. Took me ten minutes for alignment I was satisfied with. Now I have a new desktop background image :)

Now that looks evil
Having said that I would lose the really big red areas...that would make it look even more volcanic, maybe with some fiery oranges as well.

Very atmospheric, CaptKev... I like it!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

This is a close-up of a Pirate Cove (Rock Hermit with pirates)...
Awful graphics shader I admit...but it rocks anyway:

another_commander: Edited to link to image. 3.6MB download every time the page is requested is a bit much.
