"A Million Open Doors" by John Barnes?
Edit: That's more than 9000, but I have no clue what both posters above are talking about.
Edit: OK, I googled more than 9000, it seems to be a Dragonball reference.

The movie, of which the script was based on a famous novel by a famous writer, started out very ambitiously: the concept art and scenes were designed by a famous comic book artist and there were even plans of a theme park. However, due to legal troubles, the project did not come to fruition.
That would have been the end of it, if a "third party" had not taken over the project with a completely different purpose in mind...

Nope.
The "third party" in my previous hint was a secret service in need of a cover.

The original story won a Hugo Award for best novel - it can be read as "Science Fiction" or as "Fantasy" depending on interpretation by the reader.
A movie about the movie which has never been made and the successful secret service exfiltration operation for which it was a cover is scheduled to be released this fall.
One more clue:

Sorry, still no ideas. About comic books, I like Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, DeMatteis... but I really don't know this one.
